The Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God

The Gate Church of the Intercession with the Mariinsky Chambers was also built in the Moscow Baroque style between 1683 and 1688 during Tsarevna Sophia's regency. Like the Transfiguration Church, the Intercession Church stands atop the wide, triple-span Intercession Gates. The Intercession Church is unique, with its three domes aligned on an east-west axis. The icons for its iconostasis were painted by Kremlin Armory iconographers Kirill Ulanov and Vasily Pakhomov, while its carved frame was created by two carvers from the Armory, Ivan Tyurin and Miron Klimov. A three-story residential building adjoins the southern wall of the convent from the eastern side of the Intercession Church—the Mariinsky Chambers, where Tsarevna Sophia’s sister, Maria Alekseyevna Miloslavskaya, lived.
